Frequently asked questions

It all began with a simple idea fueled by a deep passion. As a small business, we pride ourselves on personal attention and dedication to every detail. Our approach is rooted in quality and integrity, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to excellence.

how does this work?

Simple! What we are doing is giving the public the power to participate in their own breeding. We make the original crosses with many lineages, and grow out the F1s to gather seeds from. Our crosses will include multiple different colors, shapes, sizes, and plant structures. This allows for a plethora of qualities for you to choose from just as any professional plant breeder does, but several years ahead of them due to our work.

How does the selection process work?

The selection process is exactly that, selecting the qualities of any given plant that you prefer. When you find the "best" candidate, simply save the seeds from that one plant, label the seeds with a description of the fruit, plant, and year in your notes. When you replant those seeds, you will have more plants that are just like the one you loved. You will still have plants that grow from the seeds that are different than the one you selected. Once again save the seeds from the best plant, label, and repeat each year until ALL plants are the same. At that point your plants are "stabilized" and you have created your very own breed.

How long until my seeds are stable, and I can name my variety?

We love this question, and will answer it with full transparency. The average variety from day one (only grown outside with one generation per year) takes roughly 8 years to stabilize. That being said, we make the initial crosses, and get the plants to F2 before releasing them. Our work shaves 2 years off of the  breeding/selection process to show appreciation of our customers precious time. If you live in a warm climate and can start seeds early indoors, and grow them late into the season, you can grow two generations per season and can have your varieties stabilized in as soon as 2.5-3 years. In the scheme of things, 3-6 years comes by pretty fast, and worth the wait!

How did you think to create this project?

As a first generation gardener I have had to learn everything I know from books, and the internet. I have spent countless days watching videos on perfect seed starting methods, wonderful garden designs, and bountiful harvests from people who don't fully explain what they are doing. I cannot bash on anyone who is willing to educate people no matter how poorly they do so, and I appreciate 15 seconds of information from a 25 minute long video. Plant breeding has always been a subject that has seemed to be very complex, sophisticated, and reserved for people with college degrees wearing lab coats. I thought to myself, "how do I make this so easy to understand that school children can participate in it?". I started reading books, and watching as many videos as I could on the subject. The videos available are far and few between. As I was learning more, and more I started to notice some similarities to things professional breeders are doing. I then realized that at a crucial step in the process all of the fun begins, and the pain fades away. It just so happens in that exact step is where the public could get involved, and could do this with minimal instructions, EUREKA! Color Chaos Seeds Co was born! We are proud to be the pioneers in this type of treasure hunt, as no other seed company offers this to the masses. * You can find companies that offer F2 seeds, but they are crossed with the purpose to offer specific types of tomatoes with minimal variations. Ours will contain multiple types of plants, leaves, colors, shapes and sizes smashed together for maximum diversity.

What if I like multiple plants?

No problem at all! Simply select your favorite plants, save the seeds with a description of what they look like, with the date and year in your notes. It is extremely important to keep these seeds separate from the others to ensure there is no mix-up in what you are selecting for. This is called making multiple "lines" of plants, and can allow you to create multiple varieties in the same amount of time as a single variety.

What happens if i mix all of my saved seeds together?

If you are to accidently or purposefully mix all of your seeds together from different selections the worst thing that can happen is that it can add more time in between reaching stability (due to more seeds you have to plant before finding the plants originally selected with limited garden space). Some would prefer it this way as you will never know what you are going to get the next season. The plants you initially selected will still show back up in the mix-up, so really its no worries at all! You can always eat your mistakes!

What is a Landrace, and why is it an option?

A Landrace is a plant that can survive in the climate it is given. The need for Landraces is a must for people that live in remote places, or extreme climates. Many Heirloom varieties cannot survive in their gardens due to being originally bred in a different climate. For example, an Heirloom bred and stabilized in the mountains of Colorado, will have a hard time being grown by someone that lives in the desert of the Southwest. If that same Heirloom had been bred and stabilized in the Southwest, it would have no problems surviving or even thriving there due to its distinct genetics. A lot of climates have disease and pest pressure, that can also hinder plant growth or survival.  Land races are vital for food supply in many parts of the world for this reason.

Why should I support your business?

Firstly, thank you for the interests in our business, as it truly means a lot to my family. I am a first generation gardener, and have been wanting to do my own plant breeding for a long time. Similar to most gardeners, breeding has always seemed so complicated, and too much to understand. I decided to make it easy for all to enjoy, with the goal of letting people have their seeds back. What is better than a room full of professional plant breeders, with the objective of breeding plants solely for big farm, and not personal use? A landscape of at home gardeners breeding for the exact opposite reasons. Many of the varieties people select for may not have a long shelf life (unless selected for), and may not be sold at a farm market, but are unbeatable in a taste test. The richness, and colors are unique to each person. In my opinion, the best tomatoes never see the farm market simply because they are eaten too quickly! Now that is something I can get behind! We at Color Chaos Seeds hope to earn your business, because we support the bigger picture of gardening, and most importantly the right of people to make their own decisions. No other seed company offers what we do, and we are proud to be the pioneers of this. * You can find companies that offer F2 seeds, but they are crossed with the purpose to offer specific types of tomatoes with minimal variations. Ours will contain multiple types of plants, leaves, colors, shapes and sizes smashed together for maximum diversity.
